Almost twenty days in to my commitment to write daily, I have been 98% successful. Actually, I should say 100% since I don't feel guilty about not writing on the days when I was driving my mother the six hours each way to and from her condo at the beach. I have not been composing my thoughts solely here on my Weebly blog. I also have a small notebook as well as a pocket journal that I keep with me at all times.
Today I began my morning as I often do when out of school, reading the comics. There are six or seven comic strips that I love. They are ones that tell stories of people with a humorous twist. At one time, I wanted to be a comic strip artist. I have the skills but not the training. Maybe when I retire.
As I read about Lynn Johnston, I realized I had no idea where Vancouver is. I do now. That led me to think about where I would go, if I could travel. My students often travel to exotic and wonderful places. Many families have second homes, some in ski resort towns, others oceanside. I know of students who travel internationally every year. This is not possible for us right now, but if I could, I would first visit Yellowstone Park and the Grand Canyon. Not in the same trip. I've never been to either. Thanks to a job that had me traveling before I had children, I have been to many wonderful places. There wasn't much time for sightseeing, however.
The one place that I was awe-struck about and found a way to get back to was Puerto Rico. After being there for a few days for work, I committed to going back with my husband. He loved San Juan as much as I did. His job, in those days, also involved significant travel. He racked up the frequent flier miles, and we took several fabulous trips, the most memorable to Hawaii. But once we had children, both of whom needed specialized medical care, trips became a part of our past. I'm neither angry about this nor sad. As a parent, you must make choices that will give your children the best possible chance at a good and healthy life. We are still making those choices to help our kids get a leg up on being self-supporting adults. It isn't easy for them, but they are giving it 100%. It isn't easy for us, either, but we feel we are doing the right thing for now. I hope it is, anyway.
As I gaze out of my window and dream about where I would go, here's my bucket trip list in no particular order:
